Call to host Incubation Centers

26 June 2018

The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), the Regional Facilitation Unit (RFU) for the Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence (ACE II) Project, invites ACEs to compete through co-financing, in development of incubation centers or learning factories by four disciplines (industry, agriculture, health and education/statistics). The aim is to develop the region’s four best ACEs into regional research hubs that will demonstrate the pathways for the transformation of research outcomes into innovative products or policies.It is envisioned that the establishment of incubation centers in universities will bring academia and industry closer to each other by providing graduate students and faculty a platform to commercialize their research, academic outputs and other technology based business ideas.

The objective of the ACE II Project is to strengthen selected Eastern and Southern African higher education institutions to deliver quality postgraduate education and build collaborative research capacity in the regional priority areas. The ACEs are addressing specific development challenges facing the region through graduate training (Master’s, PhD, and short-term courses) and applied research in the form of partnerships and collaborations with other institutions and the private sector. .

African Railway Center of Excellence (ARCE) is one of the African Centers of Excellence at Addis Ababa University (AAU). The center aspires to become a sustainable regional hub for training and research in Railway Engineering. ARCE is offering scholarships to citizens in Sub-Saharan African countries to pursue MSc/PhD studies in Railway Engineering specializing in “Civil Infrastructure”, “Rolling Stock” and “Traction and Train Control” for the 2018/19 academic year. Short course on Nuclear Technology for Water and Food Security

13 April 2018

This two weeks short course will introduce (1) FOOD IRRADIATION: the use of nuclear technology for controlling spoilage and eliminating foodborne pathogens in food. The positive effect of food irradiation is similar to pasteurization. (2) WATER TREATMENT: the utilization of nuclear technology in the water industry. In water, the focus is on testing the purity with respect to poisonous substances such as mercury and lead; and also removing fluoride and arsenic from water.
