CRAFS: Strengthening Agri-Food Systems Through Research and Training

Since its launch in November 2022, the Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS) at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) has quickly established itself as a hub for academic excellence, innovation, and capacity building in the agri-food sector. In just over two years, CRAFS has achieved remarkable progress in postgraduate education, research training, and fostering regional collaboration.

Postgraduate enrollment at UNIMA has experienced a significant boost, with CRAFS attracting 17 regional MSc and PhD students while awarding scholarships to over 185 local students. This support has contributed to a 23% increase in enrollment across postgraduate programs tailored to meet industry demands. One such beneficiary, Mr. Chisomo Singano, graduated in May 2025 with a Master of Science in Biostatistics. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I am deeply grateful to CRAFS for the funding support during my postgraduate studies. This achievement has equipped me with advanced statistical skills, empowering me to contribute meaningfully to evidence-based decision-making in my field.”

In addition to degree programs, CRAFS has extended its impact through professional training initiatives. A total of 14 short courses have been offered, benefiting 457 participants, including 148 women from across the region. These courses are designed to address critical development challenges by providing practical, applied skills.

One standout initiative was a five-day workshop on Response Surface Methodology (RSM), held in April 2025 in collaboration with LUANAR’s TACE, Mzuzu University’s ACENUB, and the World Bank. The workshop trained 21 postgraduate students from Malawi’s public universities in experimental design tools such as Design Expert and TIBCO Statistica®, significantly enhancing their research capabilities.

Another major highlight was the 2025 Regional Applied Mathematics Research School (ARMS), hosted by CRAFS in January 2025. This event brought together 31 postgraduate students and early-career researchers from across Southern Africa to explore the application of mathematics in solving real-world challenges in health and the environment. The program not only strengthened participants’ skills but also fostered regional academic networks.
