AquaFish and Invegrow Join Forces for Cannabis Research in Malawi

Cannabis has long been a topic of controversy in Malawi. However, as societal attitudes begin to shift, researchers are exploring its potential, posing new questions about its role in science, sustainability, and economic development.

In this evolving landscape, the Africa Centre of Excellence in Aquaculture and Fisheries (AquaFish) has partnered with Invegrow, one of Malawi’s licensed cannabis producers, to advance research on industrial hemp.

As part of this collaboration, Invegrow has supplied three seed varieties—Tilitonse, China Beeter Seed, and Futura 75—which are now being used in agronomic trials conducted by students from the Department of Crop and Soil Science.

The ongoing studies focus on key factors such as crop spacing, fertilizer application rates, and the comparison of organic versus inorganic inputs. The goal is to assess how industrial hemp performs under Malawi’s diverse cultivation conditions.

The partnership extends beyond field trials. It also explores hemp’s potential in areas like animal and fish feed, food innovation, and sustainable farming practices. Additionally, the collaboration includes student mentorship, internship opportunities, and initiatives to raise public awareness about cannabis.

So far, the partnership has yielded promising outcomes, including a seminar at LUANAR and a workshop that brought together researchers and industry stakeholders. These early efforts signal a growing interest in cannabis research and innovation within Malawi’s academic and private sectors.
