Africa Center of Excellence ACE2

Center for Water Management Institutionalised under Addis Ababa University

The Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM) has been formally institutionalised within Addis Ababa University (AAU).

The institutionalisation of ACEWM follows a rigorous evaluation to consolidate Addis Ababa University’s water-related entities. Emerging as the university’s flagship water studies center, ACEWM was selected for its proven excellence in leadership, internationally accredited programs, student satisfaction, robust industry and government partnerships, state-of-the-art research laboratories, globally competitive faculty, digital infrastructure, and strong scholarship mechanisms.

Now housed within the College of Natural and Computational Sciences of AAU, ACEWM is offering interdisciplinary PhD and MSc programs developed in collaboration with leading national and international institutions. The center offers three PhD programs: Water Management (with tracks in Water Science and Technology, Hydrology and Water Resource Management, and Groundwater Hydrology and Management), Aquatic Ecosystems Management, and Water and Health. Its revised MSc programs include Water Management (with tracks in Hydrology, Water Quality, and Water and Development), Water, Sanitation and Health, Wastewater Management, and Aquatic Ecosystems Management.

Professor Feleke Zewge, Director of ACEWM noted, “This milestone brings us closer to realizing our vision of becoming a continental leader in water education, research, and community engagement. By 2030, ACEWM aims to be an internationally recognized Center of Excellence, serving Africa’s pressing water management needs.”
